Tragedy struck the Marist College community this weekend, on the heels of the university's annual Family Weekend.

Scheduled from Friday, September 30th through Sunday, October 2nd, the Poughkeepsie, NY-based company welcomed the families of their student body to the area for a weekend of football, tailgating and other events.

Unfortunately, news recently broke that things turned deadly on the weekend's final day, in an incident that involved a student's father at a local area hotel.

Father of Marist Student Killed in Crossfire

According to a report from The New York Post, a father of a Marist College student was innocently killed at an area Courtyard Marriott Hotel on Sunday, October 2nd. The father, who's name and information was not immediately available, was staying at the hotel for Family Weekend, when a disagreement broke out in the lobby involving two other guests.

The argument turned deadly when the guests began to open fire. The man involved was reportedly not involved in the disagreement, but was struck and killed by an errant gun shot.

The two suspects in the murder were later identified as Devin Taylor and Roy Johnson, Jr. The former was reportedly connected to another murder investigation that was on-going at the time.

NBC News has more information on the incident below:

The shooter was found to have a 30-round, high-capacity magazine on him at the time of the shooting, and there was a lot more that was found as the investigation continued. The room in which the two were staying was said to have materials in it that could be used to make explosives. Drug paraphernalia was also said to be in the room at the time.

What happened in Poughkeepsie, New York on Sunday is a terrible, horrible tragedy, and though it happened in Upstate, families across the country will be able to feel the pain that comes with it.

Parents should be able to visit their kids at college, and enjoy a fun, safe weekend in the process. It's a shame, it's senseless, and my heart goes out to the family and friends of the family who suffered this tragedy.
