Homer LaVoie from Schodak is an 88-year-old Navy Vet who told us he was aboard the USS Great Sitkin during the Korean War in the 50s.

He also shared some other wonderful things about his long and storied life when Chrissy and I called to inform him that he was being honored as the Hometown Hero for October. Homer, a very sweet and gentle man, told us that Erik (who wrote the nomination letter to us) is one of 17 grandchildren he has.

Please take a moment to listen to our phone call with Homer LaVoie, the Hometown Hero for October:

As previously mentioned, Homer was in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was aboard the well-known ship the USS Great Sitkin. We did a little research and came across Homer’s name on the '50s roster of the USS Great Sitkin.

Click here to see how you can nominate a hero for the month of November. County Waste has partnered with us to honor those in our communities who are truly making a difference. All throughout 2019, we are recognizing one "hero" per month based on their inspirational feats, work helping their neighbors and every day passion.
