The Harvest Supermoon Shines Over Upstate New York Tonight
The full harvest moon is coming, and this one is worth stepping outside for. It will officially turn full late on Monday, October 6th, but the real magic for us here in Upstate New York will happen at moonrise on Tuesday, October 7th. That’s when it climbs over the eastern horizon just after sunset, glowing big and bright against the evening sky.
This moon is called the harvest moon because it falls closest to the autumn equinox and historically gave farmers extra light to bring in crops. It also kicks off a string of four supermoons in a row to close out 2025. A supermoon simply means the moon is a little closer to Earth than usual, so it appears larger and brighter.
And while you are looking up, the Draconid meteor shower will also be peaking around October 8th and 9th. You may spot a few shooting stars, though the moon’s glow will make them tougher to see.
If you really want the best view of this harvest moon, there is no better place than right here in Upstate New York. The Adirondacks in particular offer wide open skies, crisp mountain air, and countless lakes that reflect the moonlight in a way that feels almost magical. Whether you’re on a mountaintop, in a field, or in your backyard, the harvest moon rising in the Adirondacks is unforgettable.
So mark your calendar, step outside at dusk, and let the full harvest moon show you why fall nights here are amazing in Upstate New York.
