Judging by photos shared by the Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Department, it's a good thing the students acted when they did - because the blaze appeared to be moving quickly through their dorm.

Photos show some pretty heavy damage to the kitchen and portions of the microwave appear to have melted onto the stove.

Siena has approximately 2,500 students living in seven residential communities that include traditional residence halls, suite-style living, and townhouse units.  According to the Siena College website, townhouse units have up to 6 students living inside them.

The fire department acknowledged the students in a post on Facebook, crediting them with an assist while firefighters were on their way to campus in Loudonville.  Here's what they wrote:

"There is no routine fire call‼️ This afternoon we were dispatched to a fire alarm at Siena College. We respond to Siena numerous times over the year mostly for fire alarms.

Today as Car 52 was en route, he was advised by the dispatcher that Siena security was reporting a smoke condition from the location of the alarm. Car 52 then had the call upgraded to a structure fire. Some quick-thinking students had knocked down a fire in their townhouse with an extinguisher before we arrived. "
