8 Capital Region Teams In New York State HS Hoops Final Fours
No offense to the fine people of Binghamton but the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys basketball championship is back where it belongs, Glens Falls. The championship left the north country for the southern tier in 2017. A few years and a pandemic later, the boys are back home at the Cool Insuring Arena. The girls basketball championships continue to enjoy the awesome facilities at Hudson Valley Community College. Let's take a look at which Section II teams are playing this weekend.
In the Class AA boys semi-finals on Friday night at 7:45pm at the Cool Insuring Arena Section 2 winner and #2 ranked in New York State, Green Tech will have to get by Section 6 champion Jamestown to earn a spot in Saturday's championship game. This game is expected to be a battle. The championship will be played on Saturday at 8:45pm.
In the Class A girls semi-finals on Friday at 11:45am at Hudson Valley Community College, Section 2 powerhouse and #1 team ranked in New York State, Averill Park will have a big challenge on their hands facing Section 11 winner West Babylon. The championship game will be played Saturday at 5:15pm.
In the Class B boys semi-finals, Section 2 surprise Icabod Crane will have to get by a very tough Section 6 champion in Allegany-Limestone. Neither team was ranked in the top 5 in New York. That game is Saturday at 2:15pm at the Cool Insuring Arena with the championship game on Sunday at 3pm.
Section 2 champ and top team in New York State, Schalmont will take on Section 3 winner General Brown in the Class B girls semi-finals. That game is Saturday at 2:15pm at Hudson Valley Community College and should be more than well attended. The B championship will be played on Sunday at 11:45am.
Next up is the Class C boys. The Section 2 champion and #2 in NYS, appears to be on a mission. The Stillwater Warriors will have quite a crowd at the Cool Insuring Arena for their semi-final game on Friday at 2:45pm vs. Section 6 winner Salamanca. This should be a fun game. The championship is Saturday at 7pm.
Another Capital Region team on a mission is also in Class C and that is the Duanesburg girls basketball team. They are ranked #1 in NYS and have rolled to a 22-2 record. Duanesburg will have to get by a powerhouse from Section 4 Newark Valley. They have an impressive 15-1 record. That game will be played on Saturday at 10:45am at HVCC. The championship is Sunday at 10am.
In the Class D boys, Section 2 winner Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville will take on Prattsburgh Central/Avoca Central in a battle of the longest names in the tournament. That game will take place on Friday at 11:15am at the Cool Insuring Arena and the championship will be on Saturday at 5:15pm.
Finally, the Class D girls final four features the 10th Section 2 champion on our list (not in any order) Hartford Central taking on Section 3 winner Copenhagen on Friday at 8pm at HVCC.
