Adam Lambert is throwing cold water on the idea of recording new material with Queen.

“People always ask if we want to record together,” the onetime American Idol runner-up admitted during a new interview with Hunger. “I’m not sure it makes total sense because it wouldn’t really be Queen, because to me Queen is Freddie [Mercury]."

Lambert went on to clarify that the live experience with Queen is what really brings him the most joy. “My favorite thing is collaborating and putting these concerts together and creating onstage -- it’s super fulfilling and exciting," he said. "To present these ideas to these two gentlemen -- especially when they like the idea!”

The singer’s comments add the latest wrinkle to the ongoing will-they-won’t-they discussion regarding original material from the Queen + Adam Lambert partnership.

Guitarist Brian May previously said “you never know” when asked about recording with Lambert. Drummer Roger Taylor took things even further, saying that new songs were “quite possible.”

"If we do anything in the future, I'd like it to be something new," Taylor told Planet Rock in 2016. "I don't know how new it would sound, but I think if Brian could come up with a song or two [that] we felt sort of fitted."

The success of the Oscar-winning biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, coupled with the recent documentary The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story, seemingly paved the way for new material from the longtime collaborators. But Lambert’s comments make it clear his attention is currently elsewhere.

The singer has a new solo album due out this year, along with two months of touring this summer with Queen.
