Drivers in the Capital Region seem to be in a hurry most days. I know that going above the speed limit it a normal thing, but some commuters seem to be very liberal with those limits. This seems to be the case on Washington Avenue Extension, where people seem to think that it is a highway.

Every single day I witness driver after driver going at least 60mph on this road while weaving in and out of traffic. Have they just chosen to ignore that it is 45mph, or are the signs not posted clearly for them to see? Either way, this is getting to be dangerous.

What is the City of Albany speed limit?

In the city of Albany most of the speed limits have been changed to 25 miles per hour. Some roads are still 30 miles per hour, and that is the case for Washington Avenue. Once you get over the bridge that crosses Fuller Road the speed limit changes to 45 miles per hour and that road becomes Washington Avenue Extension. I do see a decent amount of police on Washington Avenue in Albany, but not a lot when you get more towards Crossgates Commons. Another thing I notice is people speeding to get to the streets that run parallel to Washington Ave Ext to use them a short cut to get past the traffic. They're going just as fast on those.

I will be honest with you, I've 100% gone above that speed limit, but it feels like more and more drivers are treating it more as a suggestion than an actual law. Is it because they're running late? Is it because they've gotten off of I-90 and still think they're on a major highway? I have to believe that it is a combination of both. Capital Region drivers need to work on their own time management because dangerously going in between cars from lane to lane because you couldn't get yourself moving in the morning is going to result in chaos at some point.

This isn't the only road in the area where the speed limit seems to be ignored. For years I watched people fly down Washington Avenue in Guilderland as if it were an extension of the Northway. The only reason that it doesn't seem to be a problem on Central Avenue is because of the congestion.
