Dunkin’ Is Closing 450 Locations, Including Some In The Capital Region

Dunkin' announced that they are closing 450 locations in 2020. It's a plan that has been in the works before the coronavirus pandemic so it's unrelated.

Currently, Dunkin' operates about 8,500 restaurants in 41 states. The plan to close the 450 locations are focused on the Dunkin' locations inside Speedway stores. Speedway and Dunkin agreed to part ways and the announcement came in Dunkin's February fourth-quarter earnings call.

So what does that mean for our local Dunkin' locations? Currently, the Capital Region only has three Speedway locations with Dunkin' within them. There is one in Cohoes and two in Clifton Park. Those locations are expected to close sometime in the next six months. Luckily, the Capital Region is covered with hundreds of Dunkin' locations so the closing of those three locations shouldn't be too much of a hardship.

According to the article in USA Today Dunkin' plans to expand in other gas and convenience locations, as well as other non-traditional locations such as airports, universities, and travel plazas.

The good news is that this opens the door for Dunkin' making an agreement with another local convenience store that might have even more locations around Upstate New York.

Dunkin' also says that this is part of their plan to revamp their current stores into their Next Generation Restaurant Design. Currently, there is one "Next Generations" location in Quincy, MA. Here's a video from Dunkin' on the new location and its innovative design.

In addition to Dunkin', Starbucks also has announced they are closing about 400 locations this year as well.
