I have been a comic book fab for my entire life. In Albany my favorite shop to visit was always Earthworld on Central Avenue. I still go there every now and then to see what's new in the comic world and also look through those $1 book boxes. I've even got my kids reading comics now.

All comic book fans know that the first weekend in May is free comic book day. That's a day to get out to your local comic shops to support them and also get some previews and freebies that are being offered by various publishers like Marvel and DC. This year Earthworld is taking free comic book day to a new level by turning it into a fundraiser for the West Hill Refugee Welcome Center.

What is the West Hill Refugee Welcome Center?

From their official website:

The Refugee Welcome Corporation is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and coalition of community partners in Albany, New York, who work together to help refugees with their long-term transition and relocation to the City's West Hill Neighborhood.

The WHRWC has been part of the Albany community since 2005. Now Earthworld wants to use this big day for comic shops to help their local community out.

Earthworld has been in business for over four decades because this community has looked out for us," says Glindmyer. "It’s a core tenet that our father,JC, instilled in us, to return that favor, especially to our marginalized neighbors. When we see people in our immediate circle being targeted, we don't just stand by. We use the platform we have—and the incredible talent of the comics community—to help organizations like the West Hill Refugee Welcome Center continue their vital work.

The centerpiece of the fundraiser is an exclusive tote bag featuring an image of AEW star Brody King wearing his "Abolish ICE" shirt. The artwork was provided by local creator Michael Kingston of Headlocked Comics. The bags will be sold for $20, with 100% of the proceeds donated directly to the WHRWC.

Additionally, veteran Marvel artist John Hebert (X-Men Adventures, Punisher) will be on-site to create an original, exclusive piece of art. This work will be featured in a silent raffle throughout the day, with all proceeds also benefiting the Refugee Welcome Center.
