The ongoing trade war between the United States and the rest of the world now has one of our oldest allies asking for Lady Liberty to be returned. Will it happen?

2025 has been full of intense political news since January and it doesn't look like it's going to be slowing down anytime soon. The latest to happen is that France has asked us to return the Statue of Liberty because they don't believe America represents it well anymore.

In a very bold statement, French politician Raphael Glucksman said that the United States "despises" the gift from France and that it would be better off if it were back home.

Those are some very harsh words from a co-leader of a very small political party. President Trump hasn't been making many friends since returning to office and perhaps his stance on many global and domestic issues are the reasoning behind this. Also the current tariffs that have been put on European Union goods is also not making European leaders very happy.

When asked about this proposal from the French politician Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that President Trump would "absolutely not" be returning the Statue of Liberty and said France should be reminded that it is because of the United States that they are not speaking German. She is of course talking about World War II and the USA's involvment in aiding the French.

The Statue of Liberty was gifted to the USA from France to celebrate 100 years of independence from Great Britain.

A gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. It was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886.

In 1924 the Statue of Liberty was officially designated as a National Monument.
