Baby Wildlife Season Brings Wave of Rescue Calls Across New York State
Putnam County SPCA Receives Spike In Injured Animal Calls
In early April 2026, the Putnam County SPAC shared that they had received numerous calls regarding "orphaned, abandoned, injured, or sick wildlife."
They took to social media to remind the community that in New York State "licensed wildlife rehabilitators are authorized to handle these situations." The Putnam County SPCA explains that they're trained professionals who can "provide guidance over the phone" and can respond in person if necessary.
They add "Their role is critical in ensuring wildlife receive proper care" and share resources of local wildlife rescues across the region.
However, many of these wild animals that appear to be abandoned are most likely not abandoned at all.
When Is Baby Wildlife Season in New York?
It's baby season for wild animals across New York State.
The Department of Environmental Conservation reports that baby wildlife season in New York starts in April and runs through June. Wild animals like white tailed, deer, foxes, squirrels and rabbits are all being born around that time.
Many people report seeing these young animals alone. It is important to recognize that they are not abandoned and that their parents are "most likely nearby foraging." The DEC stresses that you should not move them or touch them.
If the animal is clearly injured the DEC, call a licensed wildlife professional.
Busy Wild Animal Baby Season Across New York State
Speaking of licensed wildlife professionals....
Catskill Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation took to Facebook to share just how busy wild animal baby season has been so far in 2026.
They write "Baby season chaos is here… and it is nonstop."
In just 5 days they had to assist with over 10 injured wild animals. Rescues include a young baby fox found walking along the road alone and 2 bunnies, 1 that was attacked by a dog and the other attacked by a cat.
Catskill Mountain Wildlife Rehab adds:
Wildlife rehab is completely volunteer, and right now we are burning through supplies faster than ever between the new intakes daily and the animals some of our rehabbers have had since winter that aren’t ready for release yet.
