Hudson River Psychiatric Center on Fire...Again

In the early morning hours of June 8th, 2026, reports started to come in of a fire in Poughkeepsie.

The flames and smoke looked as though they were coming from the area of the abandoned Hudson River Psychiatric Center.

Later, we saw reports that first responders from Fairview Fire District were responding to a "fully involved 4 story structure fire HRPC property 83 Hudson View Dr" according to a post in the Dutchess County Scanner Feed group on Facebook.

Locals were concerned as this was the site of a massive fire 5 days prior. Photos were being shared of the blaze.

As of last check most of the fire has been knocked down. Smoke is lingering in the area.

Inferno Blazes Through Historic Poughkeepsie Psych Center

Around 11:45am Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026, Fairview Fire District was called to the abandoned Hudson River Psychiatric Center in Poughkeepsie, across the street from Marist University.

The flames could be seen from Ulster County. First responders on the scene battled the blaze for hours ad the fire burned through the main administration building.

After hours of knocking down the flames, the Town of Poughkeepsie Town Hall shared the following update:

In the last hour despite heroic efforts, we have lost the historic Admin Building designed by Thomas S Kirkbride—a National Historic Landmark.

While the massive fire was knocked down, it left behind a path of destruction and smoke lingered in the area for days.

The area of HRPC has been closed and abandoned since 2012, but there were talks of adding housing units to the area.

In recent years, parts of the abandoned land were transformed into Hudson Heritage Plaza with stores like ShopRite, Chipotle, Starbucks, Jersey Mikes and Moonrise Bagels.

Fairview Fire District Shares Hudson River Psych Center Blaze

Following the original blaze, the Fairview Fire District shared details of what happened behind the scenes.

4 firefighters were treated while knocking down the fire. According to the press release, two firefighters were evaluated on-scene and cleared. Two more firefighters were sent to local hospitals for treatment.
