Same ‘Giant’ Problems For New York O-Line in Atrocious 2023 Beginning

The more things change, the more they stay the same, and that saying sadly applies to the New York Giants, and their atrocious offensive line.

Changes have been made at every level of the franchise in recent years, from the general manager, to the head coach, to the wide receivers and beyond. Despite all of those moving parts, one of New York's most glaring issues in seasons past is once again a major problem in 2023.

Here's the biggest problem that I see: there are very few reasons to be hopeful for improvement before the end of this season.

New York Giants' Offensive Line Woes Continue to Haunt Franchise in 2023

Through the first few weeks of the NFL season, there have been few positive storylines about the New York Giants. They were blown out by the Dallas Cowboys, and entered halftime against the Arizona Cardinals down by 20 points.

Yes, they were able to complete a historic comeback in the second half, but there were plenty of reasons for fans to remain nervous about this team's potential in 2023.

Chief among those reasons is the play of the offensive line, which had another subpar night against the San Francisco 49ers. Check out these numbers from Thursday night's game:

With Andrew Thomas on the sidelines with an injury, the already-thin offensive line barely stood a chance against San Francisco's elite pash rush on defense. Other than center John Michael Schmitz, who notably had a pass block win rate of 100% against the Cardinals, the rest of the unit has been wildly underwhelming through three weeks.

The last few weeks have been rough for the offensive line, to say the least, and unfortunately, the next few weeks likely won't be much better. Whether Thomas returns to the lineup for the next game or not, there are long-term issues with this unit that will persist for the remainder of the season.

Guard Ben Bredeson is dealing with a concussion, and even when he was healthy against Dallas, he struggled immensely. Plus, between Marcus McKethan, Shane Lemieux, Mark Glowinski and Josh Ezeudu, none of these players have been able to solve any problemsso far this season, either.

Then, we have Evan Neal, a first-round pick in last year's NFL Draft, who has largely been a disaster to this point in his NFL career. If he cannot improve his play, and do it quickly, the Giants need to consider removing him from the starting lineup moving forward.

After all, drastic times call for drastic measures, and you can only allow QB Daniel Jones to be pummeled behind the line of scrimmage for so long before a change needs to be made.
