David Stearns took over the New York Mets on Monday, as their new president of baseball operations. Besides being force-fed general manager Billy Eppler by owner Steve Cohen, it appears that Stearns will have free rein.

David Stearns grew up in Manhattan, a rabid Mets' fan. The 38-year old executive even admitted to "sneaking-in" Shea Stadium, prior to Citi Field being built. Stearns knows how many fans are counting on him to get the team to the playoffs on a consistent basis, not a year or two followed by years of famine. Stearns made sure to mention the organization's responsibility to the general happiness of Mets fans.

Building a sustainable, winning organization is not guaranteed and the process is a large undertaking. Stearns talked about the process with friend of 'The Drive with Charlie & Dan, Deesha Thosar, "It requires an army. You need to be strong across your entire organization because weak links will be found. There's really strong competition out there. The organizations that are doing what we want to do, what we are striving to do, they don't have any weak links." That is the type of business model billionaire owner Steve Cohen is used to. The process will most likely take more time than Cohen is used to. That doesn't mean that the Stearns and the Mets won't be in it to compete for a World Championship in 2024.

Regarding next season, Stearns told Deesha, "I don't know that I would ever say that a year here should be a reset year. We have some pretty good players on the major-league roster right now. We got some young guys who broke into the big leagues who have a chance to be good. I don't know if I'd use the word reset. What I will continue to focus on is making as competitive a team as possible in 2024 while understanding that the long-term goal and the way to win a World Series is to have truly sustainable competitiveness where you're competing for championships." If accomplished, that is music to every Mets' fans' ears. There are millions of Mets' fans counting on David Stearns' success at his new job. Good luck!
