Capital Region Snowfall Totals January 16, 2024

What started as just an inch or two of snow turned into 7 inches of accumulation for some Capital Region communities on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

With the turn of the calendar to January, we have seen a very active string of storms moving across Upstate New York. While we have not gotten that one huge snowmaker yet, we have seen a string of good-sized snowfalls over the last few weeks in the Capital Region. Nothing crazy, but winter is finally acting like winter.

And it looks like that string of snowfalls could continue later this week. News Channel 13 and the National Weather Service (NWS) are both calling for snow showers Friday.

Before we get to the next round of flakes let's recap snowfall totals from throughout the Capital Region from the storm that just wrapped up today.

Winter Storm Heather was supposed to be a light storm that just brought a few inches of snow to the region. That shifted quickly overnight bringing another decent snowfall to the Capital Region in Upstate New York on Tuesday, January 16th. Another Upstate New York winter is upon us. And while it is popular for forecasters to predict a cold and snowy winter ahead, how much snow would it actually take to make it an all-time winter when it comes to big a big snowfall total for the season? In the average winter, the National Weather Service (NWS_ says we get 59.2 inches of snow in Albany. We will have to crush that number this winter for the season ahead to make this NWS top 10 list of our snowiest Albany winters on record.
