Family Restaurant in Columbia County Closes After 87 Years!

A family restaurant that has been a staple in Columbia County since 1936 has shut its doors forever.

Kozel's Restaurant located at 1006 Route 9H in Ghent served its last meal and has closed. This marks the end of eighty-seven years in the community. The official announcement was on November 12th.

Established in 1936 by Frank and Eva Kozel as the Old Post Road Tavern on Route 9H, the restaurant underwent transitions over the years. In 1955, their children, Frank Jr. and Eddie assumed control, incorporating it as Kozel’s Inc.

In the 1980s, third-generation owners Gus Kozel and Helen managed the restaurant until their retirement, closing a chapter in the restaurant's storied history according to News 10 ABC.

The owners expressed pride in serving multiple generations with a heartfelt mantra: "There are no strangers here, only friends we haven’t met."

Kozel’s was known for its unique practice of cutting and roasting its meats. The diverse menu featured hamburgers, steaks, daily specials, and signature open-faced hot sandwiches.

In a farewell message, the owners conveyed appreciation for the community's support, stating, "Thank you for your many years of patronage." The message concluded with a warm sentiment, "Na zdravi," signifying a toast to health and a heartfelt goodbye to the loyal patrons who were an integral part of Kozel’s journey.
