Have you always wanted to try camping but felt a little intimidated by the idea of sleeping in the woods? New York State has a program that might be exactly what you're looking for.

The Department of Environmental Conservation has brought back its popular First Time Camper Program for 2026. The program is designed for people who have never camped before and want an easy introduction to the great outdoors.

What Does The Program Offer?

DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton says the program gives newcomers a chance to experience everything that makes outdoor recreation special. From camping and fishing to hiking, boating, and bird watching, participants can try it all without worrying about buying gear or figuring everything out on their own.

Best of all, the program is completely free. New Yorkers can enter the lottery through June 12th for a chance to take part.

Participants can choose from several campground locations across the Adirondacks and Catskills:

• Meacham Lake Campground, July 10 through July 12

• Kenneth L. Wilson Campground, July 17 through July 19

• Ausable Point Campground, July 24 through July 26

• Northampton Beach Campground, July 31 through August 2

• Mongaup Pond Campground, August 7 through August 9

• Nicks Lake Campground, August 14 through August 16

• Luzerne Campground, August 21 through August 23

What Happens Next?

Those selected through the lottery will receive just about everything needed for a camping trip, including a tent, sleeping bags, camp chairs, a lantern, and even firewood.

A DEC Camping Ambassador will also be on hand to teach the basics and help campers get settled in. Participants can learn outdoor skills like fishing, paddling, hiking, and bird watching while enjoying a weekend surrounded by some of New York's most beautiful scenery.
