It’s that time of year when we voluntarily sign up to get creeped out. Ghost tours and haunted attractions are popping up across the Capital Region, including one inside the New York State Capitol in Albany.

The building is packed with history, but apparently, some of its former visitors and workers may have stuck around. You can hear their stories on a free Capitol Hauntings Tour. Free is good. Whether you leave with goosebumps is another story.

Who Might Be Haunting the Capitol?

One of the spookiest tales involves a night watchman who died in the Capitol fire of 1911. Some believe he still makes his rounds through the building. Talk about never taking a day off.

There are also stories about two former United States presidents who supposedly visited after their deaths. I’d say that deserves an explanation.

Keep an Eye on Those Carvings

The Capitol took 32 years to build, and its elaborate carvings give you plenty to look at. But tucked among those impressive details is a hidden demon. Suddenly, admiring the architecture feels a little creepier.

The tour explores the legends behind these unusual features and other strange happenings.

How Can You Take the Tour?

Tours run on select dates through Friday, October 30, with departures at 5 and 6 p.m. Space is limited, so reserve your spot HERE.

Meet at the tour desk in the Capitol’s State Street Lobby. For groups of 10 or more, call 518-474-2418.

Bring your curiosity. Hopefully, the only thing following you home is a good story.
