Open and Closed This Labor Day

Labor Day 2026 is right around the corner and while many of you might already have plans lined up, some of you might still be on the fence. You may want to do some last minute shopping, so what is open and what is closed?

Since Labor Day is a federal and state holiday there are some places that are automatically closed while many choose to remain open to capture potential business opportunity.

These places are closed for Labor Day

The following places will be closed for Labor Day in 2026 around New York.

All US Post Office locations
All banking locations
FedEx
UPS
Costco

It looks like Costco is the only traditional store that will be fully closed on Labor Day. There are several other stores that will be operating with some modified hours, according to Retail Me Not. Aldi, Walgreens, Starbucks, and CVS are listed as having special hours so far. Other stores may be added to that list. Other places that might have modified hours would be gyms. You should check with your local gym to find out about their Labor Day hours.

The good news for many of us who are off for the holiday is that many places will be open for normal business hours. This could also be a big shopping day for many parents who are doing last minute back to school shopping for their children.

Are Liquor Stores Open on Labor Day?

I am sure many of you are planning gatherings big or small for the holiday. You may need to make a last second run for some alcoholic beverages. Luckily for us in New York there are no sate regulations that say that they need to be closed for this holiday. While they may choose to be closed to observe the holiday, most will be open normal hours. The best option is to check with your local liquor store to find out.
