On Friday January 30, 2025 many are asking that we all skip school, work, and doing any nonessential shopping for a total nationwide shutdown across the United States. This is all in response to recent ICE activities taking place around the country, but in particular the volatile events that lead to the death of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

The call for the shutdown comes after growing unrest around the country. Many want ICE agents and other federal authorities to be held accountable and by essentially shutting the country down they hope to get the message across.

The call for everyone to essentially go on strike for one day has been amplified by many celebrities including Pedro Pascal and Ellen DeGeneres. The goal is to put a dent into capitalism and stop the finding of ICE by getting congress to vote against further funding.

Why the shutdown?

According to Nationalshutdown.org, this nationwide shutdown that was triggered by the people of Minnesota's reaction to ICE activities has shown the American people the way to get the program defunded. There is also a call for citizens to contact their leaders in congress to get them to vote against the continued funding of ICE.

Of course, this is all being met with pushback from voices on the other side who feel that a shutdown wouldn't accomplish anything. They also feel that these federal agents were simply just doing their job.

One thing is certain, there is a lot of unrest in the country right now. It's unclear what will bring everyone closer together, but many of the events that have taken place have certainly set the tone for the next three years.
