For longtime fans awaiting the reunion of their '90s alt-rock heroes, the first show of Smashing Pumpkins' "Shiny and Oh So Bright" tour lived up to its name. Rather than wallow in self-pity or luxuriate in melancholy, frontman Billy Corgan led two of his original bandmates -- guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin -- along with modern-era Pumpkin Jeff Schroeder through an uplifting spectacle that included costume changes, stage roaming and numerous covers.

The performance last night (July 12) in Glendale, Ariz. featured Pumpkin-ized versions of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and the “Baby Mine” from the Disney film Dumbo.

A three-minute video montage opened the show before Corgan performed "Disarm" solo. Then, the full band demonstrated why they struck a major chord with the masses during the heyday of alternative rock.

“Let’s go back to your beginnings as I shall go back to mine … but then again that’s why we’re here, no past, no future,” said Corgan before launching into "Zero," sounding more than a bit like Willy Wonka in the land of "pure imagination."

The 31-song set spanned the Pumpkins entire history and included "Siva" from their 1991 full-length debut, Gish as well as fan favorites such as  "Zero," "Cherub Rock," "Today," "Ava Adore," "1979" and "Tonight Tonight." The only song the band played from its upcoming album was "Solara," but the concert featured the band's first band performance of "Blew Away" from Pisces Iscariot since 2000.

The "Shiny and Oh So Bright" tour continues tonight in Oklahoma City and runs through Sept. 9 in Edmonton, Alberta before heading overseas. See all of the scheduled dates here.
