Last week news broke that Starbucks would be closing over 200 locations across North America, with 17 of them being right here in New York. The locations that closed across the state were ones primarily in the New York City area but did stretch into the lower Hudson Valley and Western New York, too. The Capital Region was spared for now from seeing any of our Star Bucks locations being shutdown by the company.

Now that we've lost almost 20 Star Bucks in New York, how many locations are left in the Empire State? According to ScrapeHero, there are 720 total Starbucks in New York currently. As of September 2026 New York has the fourth most locations in the entire United States. California has the most with over 3,000 locations, followed by Texas with just over 1,400. Of those 720 locations in NY, they estimate that around 400 are found in Upstate, while the remaining are spread out across the New York City area.

Why did Starbucks Close So Many Locations?

As with so many of the places we've lost in 2026, the locations that were shuttered by Starbucks were no longer profitable for the company, according to Fast Company. They say that the locations that the chose to close down could not find a "path to acceptable financial performance."

In all, the total closures around North America totaled about 1% of the total locations they have in both the United States and Canada.

Starbucks isn't the only major chain or franchise to see closures in 2026. Denny's, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Wendy's and more have all announced significant closings this year, and more likely coming as we head towards the end of 2026.
