Bret Michaels Surgery [Update]

Bret Michaels is now recuperating at home after being released yesterday from a Phoenix hospital following heart surgery to repair a hole in his heart.

 Monday’s operation at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center was a success, and now Bret must lay low for a few weeks to recover fully.

"Bret's procedure had excellent results," said Dr. Mansour Assar, interventional cardiologist at St. Joseph's, in a statement. "Because of the successful outcome and Bret's determination, I believe he will be able to return to normal activity within weeks."

Michaels was treated at the hospital last April for a brain hemorrhage; it was during that treatment that doctors determined that he suffered from a hole in his heart, which may have caused small strokes last year.

Doctors inserted a catheter into a vein in Michaels' groin and guided a PFO closure device into his heart. The device will remain in Michaels' heart permanently to stop abnormal blood flow between the two chambers of the heart.

Michaels, a Type 1 diabetic who lives in north Scottsdale, was accompanied by his fiancée, Kristi Gibson, and their two children during his hospital stay.
