Changes to NY State Drivers License and Social Security? Why Choose X?
The look and options available for our New York State driver's license have evolved in 2022 and your Social Security information is about to as well. One example for your drivers license is the Real ID Card. If you want to fly out of Albany you will need one by May 3, 2023.
The latest changes to your license and Social Security info could be summed up with the letters 'M', 'F' and the letter 'X'.
Earlier this year Governor Hochul announced that New Yorkers can now choose an X gender on a New York State drivers license or ID card. What does the X represent? If you're transgender and non-binary you can have the X represent you in the gender section of your license or ID.
Now the Social Security administration is implementing the 'self-attestation of sex marker' in Social Security number records. Simply put you will be able to self-select your sex on your social security number record and this option is available immediately.
With Social Security, as of now an individual may only choose male or female as their sex and will no longer need to provide medical or legal documentation of their sex designation now that the policy change is in place. What about an 'X'?
