I think my wife and I found a hidden gem this weekend. Have you tried The Cuckoo’s Nest at 234 Western Ave in Albany? If not, you should! Especially if you like food with a southern flair. The Cuckoo’s Nest website describes their food as American inspired southern cuisine. I just describe it as freakin’ amazing. Granted it doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside is a whole 'nother story. Great food, friendly wait staff and good prices for gourmet food.

My wife grew up in Kentucky so she loves a lot of southern cooking. I spent a lot of time in Kentucky going to The University of Kentucky and growing up outside Cincinnati so I've also had my share of good southern fried food. We both thought that finding good southern food was going to be a challenge in Upstate New York.

Then we found The Cuckoo's Nest and our search was over. My wife and I ordered their Fried Green Tomatoes as our appetizer. Now, I’ve had fried Green tomatoes before and always thought they were just okay, my wife had never tried them. They were so good. Lightly breaded and fried with Pimento Cheese, Bacon, Buttermilk Ranch and Chives. I could have eaten 10 plates of them. For our late lunch we had the Crave Fried Chicken Sandwich and Southerner Fried Chicken Sandwich. Both were out of this world! Moist chicken, perfectly cooked with a light and crunchy breading and topped with Pimento, Lettuce, Pickled Green Tomato, Bacon, Ranch and Lettuce, Pickles, and Spicy Mayo. The fries were absolutely perfect and the coleslaw was some of the best I’ve ever eaten with the prefect balance of sweet and tangy.
