On Saturday October 10th, New York State Police issued a citation to a driver clocked traveling at 104 miles per hour. That is not a typing mistake. One hundred and four miles per hour, on the Taconic State Parkway no less!

Over the Columbus Day Weekend New York State Police were out in full force looking for impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and those traveling over the speed limit, to name a few. Even the longest tenured Trooper might have a difficult time finding a case where a driver was going faster than 104mph.

The speed limit on the stretch of the Taconic State Parkway, where this individual was traveling through Dutchess County, is posted at 55 miles per hour. This is 49mph OVER the speed limit! Almost double the posted speed.

I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination but this makes me angry. You and I travel the Taconic with our families, friends, children, and pets. Same for the Thruway, the Northway, etc. but to have some dummy put our lives at risk to drive that fast is not cool.

According to the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, anyone traveling more than 30mph over the speed limit faces a minimum fine of $180, a maximum fine of $600 and up to 30 days in jail.

This one incident will place 11 penalty points against your driver license. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles uses a points system to identify high-risk drivers. Accumulating 11 or more points within 24 months may result in license suspension.
