
Free Air Conditioners for New Yorkers: See If You Are Eligible
Much of New York is starting to thaw from an icy winter and regain some seasonal temperatures in the 60's and 70's. If the Farmer's Almanac prediction is accurate, New York State will be broiling this summer. Relief is on the way!
New York State is offering free air conditioners and installation to qualifying residents. This cooling assistance benefit is courtesy of the state's Home Energy Assistance Program. (HEAP) Let's see if you are eligible.

The cooling assistance benefit opened on April 15th and, if you are eligible, you may receive one cooling assistance benefit per applicant household. This benefit may be used toward the purchase and installation of an air conditioner or a fan.
There are some guidelines to this benefit, such as:
- 1 air conditioner or fan, not to exceed $800
- 1 air conditioner or fan with installation, not to exceed $1000 for an existing wall sleeve unit.
Here are some of the requirements to see if you are eligible:
- Your household's gross monthly income is at or below the current income guidelines for your household size.
- 1 person - $3322
- 2 people - $4345
- 3 people - $5367
- 4 people - $6390

- You receive SNAP benefits
- Your household contains at least one individual with a documented medical condition that is exacerbated by extreme heat
- Your household contains a vulnerable member based on their age (60 years or older, or under age 6)
- A member of your household is a United States Citizen or Qualified Non-Citizen
