Gershon’s Deli in Schenectady Has Closed For Good
There are businesses in the Capital Region that many would consider staples to our vibrant community. Gershon's Deli in Schenectady was one of those places until they made the sudden announcement on Sunday evening (February 1, 2026) that Friday January 30th had been their final day of operation and would not open again for business.
This came as a big shock to many of those who reacted to the post (seen below) because this local establishment was a hug part of their lives.
Sudden closure
In the post Gershon's owner and operator, Antonia Nelson, detailed that when she took over nine years ago she wanted to make sure that the business that her father had built stayed strong. She did all she could to maintain that over the years, but it became a very uphill battle for the entire Gershon's team after to COVID pandemic.
For more than 60 years, Gershon’s has been shaped by the people who walked through our doors. Every employee, customer, client, and friend has played a role in our story and our success. Unfortunately, rising food costs, ongoing economic challenges, the lasting effects of COVID, and the loss of my final opportunity this week have left me with no other choice.
Reading through the comments on the post are enough to show you just how much Gershon's meant to everyone. People sharing stories of going their as children. Celebrating the birth of a child, a wedding or other happy times. Now, just a memory as they close their doors for good.
