The 53rd Annual Grammy awards are Sunday night. One of the most interesting categories is the Best Hard Rock Performance. Nominees consist of '90s grunge bands, a supergroup and a legend.

The Grammy's Best Hard Rock Performace Category is usually a controversal category and this year its a good one.  Nearly 20 years after their genre took over the mainstream its Alice in Chains vs. Soundgarden vs. Stone Temple Pilots, Supergroup Them Crooked Vultures and the legend that is Ozzy Osbourne round out the category.

The nominees are:
'A Looking in View' -- Alice In Chains
'Let Me Hear You Scream' -- Ozzy Osbourne
'Black Rain' -- Soundgarden
'Between the Lines' -- Stone Temple Pilots
'New Fang' -- Them Crooked Vultures

Soundgarden has had the most success with the Grammy's. As they have won two Grammys in 1995 with Black Hole Sun - Best Hard Rock Performance and Spoonman - Best Metal Performance.  They have had several nominations including  1992 Badmotorfinger - Best Metal Performance,  1993 Into The Void - Best Metal Performance,  1995 Superunknown - Best Rock Album, 1997 Pretty Noose - Best Hard Rock Performance, as well as being a part of several nominations and winners with Audioslave and Chris Cornell projects.

Stone Temple Pilots have won in 1994 Plush - Best Hard Rock Performance  and have been nominated in 1997 Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart - Best Hard Rock Performance and in 2001 for Down - Best Hard Rock Performance.

As long as Ozzy Osbourne has been around, he is no stranger to the Grammy's, In 1994, he was awarded a Grammy for the track "I Don't Want to Change the World" from Live & Loud for Best Metal Performance and won another time in 1999 Best Metal Performance for Black Sabbath's Iron Man.

Even supergroup 'Them Crooked Vultures' are no strangers to the Grammy's as Dave Grohl has won Grammy awards with Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, while John Paul Jones has won a Lifetime Achievement Award with Led Zeppelin in 2005.

The band I am pulling for this time is Alice In Chains. They are due big time, they've been nominated for Grammy Awards in the Best Hard Rock Performance category seven times since 1992, but have never won.  'Dirt' (1993), 'I Stay Away' (1995), 'Grind' (1996), 'Again' (1997), 'Get Born Again' (2000), 'Check my Brain' (2010) and now 'A Looking in View' (2011).   In my opinion Alice In Chains should have won last year and sometimes the Academy knows when it messed up, and they love comeback artists so hopefully this year is Alice In Chains!  Put your money on it!

The 53rd Grammy Awards, take place Sunday night February 13th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will air on CBS-TV, locally WRGB Channel 6.
