New York State is decorated with great architecture from the grandeur of Empire Plaza in Albany to the Gilded Age buildings of Troy as well as the many octagon shaped Victorian homes of the region. Nothing, however, compared to Halcyon House at the Bennett School for Girls in Millbrook and now it's gone.

If you ever found yourself driving along Route 343 approaching Route 82 in Millbrook, New York you could not miss the Bennett School for Girls. The first time I laid eyes on this enormous and unique structure I was also greeted with signs warning "Keep Out" and "Danger".

This was Halcyon Hall, part of Bennett College, which was built to be a hotel but became a school. The building was scheduled for demolition in December of 2021 but still stood until recently. Today the remnants are in piles on the ground.

Legend has it that, while the building was still standing, some of the girls that attended the school in the 50's, 60's and 70's still called this campus home. Visitors have reported slamming doors, quiet voices, apparitions floating through the halls. With Halcyon Hall and the rest of the campus gone what happens to the hauntings? Do they stay or do they ghost?

The plan is to turn this 32 acre property into a park.

Let's take a look at Bennett College and Halcyon Hall before and after demolition. "After" photos and drone footage courtesy of Christopher Cromwell.
