How Much Is Spectrum Going To Raise Rates In August?
Programming costs are what Spectrum says is causing the rate increase coming to subscribers in August. Customers using Spectrum’s TV-only packages will see their bills increase by $1.50 per month. It's part of an increased surcharge from $13.50 to $16.45 per month for cable customers that Spectrum is recouping for increased expenses in the cost of local programming. Customers will see the rate increase on the August 5th bill.
The good news is that Spectrum internet, voice, and mobile rates are staying the same. At least for now. You know how cable companies love to put an extra dollar here and there on your bill.
Spectrum spokesperson Lara Pritchard said, "Programmers annually raise programming fees to deliver the same content, leading to higher costs across the entire industry. The increase we are passing through to viewers is a direct result of these rising programming costs.”
Spectrum isn't the only internet/streaming provider increasing rates. Streaming services and providers all over the country have or will raise their prices this summer, including Youtube TV, AT&T/DirecTV, and ESPN.
Spectrum is currently working on bringing 145,000 New York residents broadband internet by 2021. This is going to be very important to families with school-age children that might have to do some kind of remote learning this fall.
According to an article on Broadband Now 30% of New Yorkers don't have broadband, high-speed internet at their home. I don't know about you, but I was really surprised that that number was so high.
In the spring, Spectrum offered free internet to families with school-age children that didn't have broadband internet access. There has been no word if they will offer the same deal in the fall.
