Is Amazon Expanding in the Capital Region?
No doubt Amazon has had a major impact on the area so far, from hub counters to the distribution center in Schodack. There is chatter that Amazon may be looking to purchase another large piece of property in the Capital Region.
The Albany Business Review and the Times Union say the company that built the Schodack distribution center for Amazon is looking to build on a 140 acre site off of Northway exit 16. The company, Scannell Properties, is known to build warehouses across the US, especially for Amazon.
The land being looked at is located in the town of Wilton and is currently owned by Frank Parillo, who also owns the Wilton Travel Plaza next to it. When asked by the Times Union what he believes the developer has in store for the land, he didn't get specific, but hinted it was going to be a big deal.
I'm sure the use will generate several hundred jobs and will be a great neighbor for the town of Wilton and Saratoga County.
That particular are off exit 16 is already home to two massive distribution centers for Target Stores and Ace Hardware.
Scannell Properties had been eyeballing a large piece of the Luther Forest Tech Park in Malta, but scrapped those plans because of zoning hurdles and the news that GlobalFoundries may want to expand in that same area.
The Amazon Distribution Center in Schodack opened in 2020 and employs over a thousand people. Again, it's still speculation that it's Amazon looking to build in the exit 16 area, and those close to the project say plans are still in the very early stages.
