Saturday Will Be The 118th Time Michigan & Ohio State Compete
The University of Michigan and Ohio State Buckeye football rivalry began in 1897. Here are some highlights and lowlights of their 117 times on the field together.
Michigan Wolverines Dominated Early Rivalvy with Ohio State
When the Wolverines and Buckeyes first started playing one another in 1897 which was 20 years before there were any sort of conferences in college football, Michigan dominated Ohio State.
In the first 16 meetings between Michigan and Ohio State, it was the Wolverines that dominated between the two schools. Michigan won 13 games, lost 1, and tied with Ohio State 2 times. In one game in 1902, U of M beat OSU 86 to 0 making this the biggest deficit between the two teams in their history against each other. It wasn't until the 1960s before the Buckeyes were able to really stick it to the Wolverines with a score of 50-20 in 1961, and 50-14 in 1968.
What Were The Biggest Win Streaks Between Michigan and Ohio State?
It was before conference play when Michigan racked its most back-to-back wins over Ohio State scoring 9 in a row from 1901 to 1909. In conference play against OSU, Michigan's biggest winning streak was 6 seasons in a row from 1922 to 1927.
Ohio State really stepped up in the rivalry against Michigan in the 2000s. OSU made a run of 7 back to back wins over U of M from 2004 to 2010. The Buckeyes made their most recent streak of wins against the Wolverines from 2012 to 2019 with 8 wins in a row.
What is The Overall Record Between The Wolverines and the Buckeyes?
After Michigan and Ohio State played each other 117 games the record stands as Michigan 60 wins, Ohio State 51, with 6 ties between the two teams. The only two times the two teams were scheduled to play and didn't meet was in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Saturday Marks the 118th Time Michigan and Ohio State Will Meet on the Gridiron
Ann Arbor is the home of Michigan Stadium, also known as "The Big House" for perhaps the biggest games between the two schools in their history of meeting on the Gridiron.
#2 Ohio State just off its win over Minnesota 37-3 will come to Ann Arbor Saturday to square off against #3 Michigan who came off with a 31-24 victory over Maryland and the second in a row without coach Jim Harbaugh is a game that will determine where the two teams may land in the playoffs.
The Wolverines and the Buckeyes are both 11-0 which makes this an even more climatic game. The drama will be high with Michigan coach Harbaugh not being allowed on the sidelines, and even though between two suspensions this season for the head coach and winning 5 of those games, those 5 were not against Ohio State but if there is a team that can stop the Buckeyes it is the Wolverines.
The #2 Ohio State Buckeyes at the #3 Michigan Wolverines for a game time of high noon on Saturday, November 25th making this the 118th time the two teams will meet on the field and possibly the biggest game the two schools have played to date.
