Minimum wage is one of those things that has been discussed and fought over for what seems like forever.
New York has always been ahead of the curve, allowing employees in the state to make over double the federal minimum wage. Unfortunately, New York's legacy of bumping the minimum wage yearly is coming to a halt in 2027...
No Minimum Wage Raise
For the past 10 years, New York has attempted to keep their workers afloat by raising the state's minimum wage alongside inflation. This is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) Northeast Region's three-year moving average.
As of January 1st, 2027, that goal, or "off-ramp" was met. Because of that, New York State will not be raising their minimum wage, and instead, keeping it at $17 an hour for NYC residents, and $16 an hour for Upstate NY residents.
That being said, minimum wage rate for home care aides will jump to $20 New York City, Long Island and Westchester County and $19 in Upstate NY on January 1st, 2027.

Possible Increase
Despite wages not rising in January, Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed a change to the off-ramp provisions that would allow a new increase on March 1st, 2027.

If approved, minimum wage would rise to $17.60 for NYC and $16.55 for Upstate NY. That same change would apply to home care aides, pushing those to $20.30 in NYC and $19.30 in Upstate NY.
You can read more about the proposed changes in the Governor's memo HERE, or at the wages section of the New York State website.
