These trails not only promote physical well-being but also provide a mental respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Out of the twenty nominated, two are right here in Upstate New York.

Watkins Glen's Gorge Trail

Watkins Glen's Gorge Trail packs 19 waterfalls into a compact 2.2-mile round-trip journey where hikers traverse many stone staircases, arched bridges, and fern-draped walls. This moderately challenging trail takes about two hours. One of the most photographed spots is Rainbow Falls, where you can walk behind the waterfall for a unique perspective. Note that the Gorge Trail will be under construction beginning July 7th, 2025, and the trail is expected to fully re-open before July 4th, 2026. During construction, access to the Gorge Trail and 15 waterfalls will be accessible from the North Rim Trail, and shuttle service will remain available.

The Trapps at Mohonk Preserve

The Trapps trail system at Mohonk Preserve provides access to one of North America's premier rock-climbing destinations. This easy 5-mile loop through the hardwood, mid-mountain forest offers sweeping views of New York's Hudson Valley. More of a 2-hour walk than a hike, visitors can even bring kids in strollers to appreciate this Shawangunk wonderland.
