New signs around historic Kingston, NY have sparked controversy amongst the residents.

If you've ever been to the City of Kingston, New York you know that they really lean into the history of their city. A lot of what you see around Kingston reflects that, including their signage. Now it looks like the city went ahead and "upgraded" those signs and people are livid. They're so unhappy that one resident has chained herself to the historic waterfront sign in protest to avoid having it be removed.

Not everything needs to be spruced up. Sometimes it is okay to leave things the way that they are.

The signs have been a major point of contention since they made the recent debut in the historic city. Not only to they ruin the historic charm of what the former signs used to bring to the table, but they also contain typos. Instead of Ultser the one sign read "Uster." According to MSN, the City says that the sign company will fix it as their own expense.

The thing that I find to be the most insulting about this new lifeless signage is that it doesn't really refelct Kingston at all. Those older signs were a part of the DNA of that city. Kingston was the first Capital of the State. Why are we trying to remove that history in favor of boring brown signs? Oh, and according to this Reddit thread the upgrade of these signs cost the city $400,000.

The comments read like this:

they really capture absolutely nothing about the city whatsoever… impressive

Could have fixed a lot of pot holes with that money

Truly devoid of any feeling. Very disappointing

This type of design work is the same type of garbage we're seeing at new construction of shops and restaurants around the country. Places the visuals devoid of any sort of personality at all.

If I were the City of Kingston I would ask for my money back because these signs are horrible and a total waste of city funds.
