Lake George, One of Top 3 Capital Region Towns. Here Are the Rest
Travel & Leisure named 11 of the best small towns in America and Hudson, New York made the list! Congrats Hudson! Selected for it's proximity to Manhattan. Hudson has everything you could want in a small town: a walkable city center, great shopping and dining, and interesting experiences in a relaxed setting.
Also on their list are the towns of Stowe, Vermont, St. Augustine, Florida and Sedona, Arizona. They all seem great but I think more towns from the Capital Region should have made the list. Here are 3 more that I think would have been great additions.
Saratoga Springs - Before moving to New York I would be sure to plan a trip each Summer to see a show at SPAC and spend time in Saratoga. In my opinion SPAC is one of the finest concert venue experiences in North America in tandem with Saratoga Spa State Park. Everyone loves Saratoga with the Racetrack at Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Winery & Tasting Room and the Saratoga Casino Hotel! Take some time and explore the Beekman Street Arts District, which is a great section of town walking distance from Broadway.
Can't wait for concerts to return to SPAC
Stockade District of Schenectady - I love the history of the Stockade District of Schenectady. When we explore the area we start with a ride down Washington Avenue so we can see the Revolutionary homes before arriving at Riverside Park with views of the Mohawk River. Up and down Front Street and Union are automatic each visit as we read the historical street informing us of facts such as "Washington once visited". We love that stuff! Once around the First Reformed Church of Schenectady and a hello to Lawrence the Indian before stopping for lunch at Clinton's Ditch.
Lake George - "The Queen of the American Lakes". You don't have to be from the Capital Region to know how special Lake George is. When I was a kid we made the trip to the lake for summer vacation and the town looks very much the same today and that is meant as a compliment. No matter the season, a walk up and down Route 9 and passing by the wax museum, down Beach Road to the Minne Ha-Ha and Fort William Henry is a trip down memory lane.
Spent my birthday in town last November and return often.
Fact is I could choose a a dozen or more Capital Region towns for the list of best town and still come up short. We are fortunate.
