New Yorkers Will Soon Receive Speeding Tickets In the Mail

Last Month the New York State launched it's Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, (AWZSE), which is designed to deter motorists from speeding through work zones. Legislation was signed by Governor Hochul in 2021 and now it's New York Vehicle and Traffic Law 1180 E. In short, there are cameras in work zones that will catch you if you are speeding.

New York State Police have been enforcing the speed limit, as they always have. During the first month of the AWZSE program some drivers were clocked between 80-99mph in New York work zones. If the camera saw you speeding, you will be getting a ticket in the mail soon.

The AWZSE program began on April 17, 2023 with a 30-day warning period, which is set to expire May 15th. The cameras were installed, speed was tracked and, according to Syracuse.com, warning notices are now being sent out to approximately 3,500 motorists for allegedly speeding through 176 different work zones.

The warning period ends Wednesday May 16th. Starting on May 17th, fines will be issued as follows:

$50 for first violation
$75 for second violation
$100 for third and subsequent violations within 18 months of the first violation

Now that the warning period is coming to an end, New York State DOT indicates that, if caught speeding, a Notice of Liability will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle within 14 days from the incident for vehicles registered in New York.

Although you can't miss a work zone, you might not see the cameras. Enforcement units use sport-utility vehicles and one of these units can be located within the limits of any work zone on interstates, parkways, and other controlled access highways.
