Throw up your 41 salutes, because we got the chance to speak with Sum 41’s Cone McCaslin and Dave Baksh about their new album, 13 Voices, Dave’s return to the band, frontman Deryck Whibley’s recovery and more!

Sum 41 have some of the most passionate fans in the world of pop punk, so when Dave ‘Brownsound’ Baksh announced his departure in 2006, those who had followed the band were both shocked and saddened. After a nine-year absence, Dave rejoined his childhood friends and received one of the most impassioned welcome-homes in recent memory.

Baksh reconnected with Deryck Whibley while the frontman was recovering from his near-death experience from heavy alcohol abuse. However, the wheels were in motion for Dave’s return even earlier. “We were toying around with the idea before the whole incident had happened. To be honest, it was the last thing on my mind when [Deryck] went into the hospital to recuperate. Once he got out, he had kind of rekindled the idea of it happening and I was all for it … Ever since I heard Screaming Bloody Murder, I was like, ‘Damn, I wanna be on that record.’”

As the guys profess in “Fat Lip,” “Maiden and Priest were the gods that we praised.” We had to find out what the guys’ favorite Iron Maiden and Judas Priest records are. Turns out Dave has an especially eclectic taste when it comes to the heavy metal legends, so find out Cone and Dave’s favorites along with which records the guitarist warms up with before every show.
