Many in the Capital Region will never forget the Albany River Rats, I sure won't. Did you know now three former River Rat players are actually head coaches?

Tonight is opening night for Albany Devils hockey, they are on the road facing off against the Providence Bruins. With that in mind lets take a trip to the past and name off some success of former players of the previous Albany hockey team the Albany River Rats.

  • Geordie Kinnear - Geordie actually has his number 4 retired with the River Rats/Devils. There is a banner hanging from the rafters of the TU for it. An assistant coach for the River Rats for seven seasons he now is the head coach for the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds.
  • Kevin Dean - Dean was a well known player for Albany when he captained the Rats to a Calder Cup win in 1994-95. Dean also made it to the NHL for a cool 331 games as well before coaching the Trenton Devils for a season.
  • John Madden - No, not that John Madden. However how can you not be a coach with a name like that? Madden only had two seasons with the Rats before moving up to the NHL for 831 games. He was an assistant coach at the NHL level with Florida and now is the coach of the Cleveland Monsters.

Will you ever forget the Albany River Rats? Also what is your fondest memory of them?
