History and the Capital Region go hand-in-hand.

Albany, New York, is the longest continuously-chartered city in the United States. It was named the state capital in 1797, and has remained such for over two centuries. The Capital District's history runs deep, and the same can be said about this area's history with sports.

From Minor League Baseball, to arena football, to AHL hockey and beyond, franchises have been bringing glory to sports fans in the Capital Region for generations. From the Albany Senators of the late 1800's and early 1900's, to the Albany Patroons of the 1980's, to both iterations of the Albany Empire, the stories that can be told about teams from this area are endless.

The Capital Region celebrated another sports title over the weekend, as the Albany Empire won their second straight NAL championship, defeating Carolina at the MVP Arena. Seeing the Empire lift the trophy made me want to take a look back, and re-live some of the more memorable championships won by teams in the area.

What I found, was an incredible list of teams, players, coaches and staff that can all say they've brought the Capital Region a championship. So, I took ten of my favorite stories, and broke them down below. These stories bridge the gap of different generations of sports fans in the Capital Region, and help to explain why Albany is one of the more underrated sports markets in the Northeast, if not the country.
