
Armed Confrontation At Cairo Campground Ends In Fatal Shooting
New York State Troopers are investigating a Trooper involved shooting in the Greene County town of Cairo, New York.
Details are still being sorted but what we can tell you is this case started Monday evening with a call regarding an assault at a Cairo campground. How it ended will be disturbing to some readers. Please read with caution.

At around 8:20p on Monday September 14, 2026, according to a New York State Police press release, New York State troopers assigned to State Police Catskill responded to the Whip-O-Will Campground, located at 644 Route 31 in the Town of Cairo, for a report of an assault involving two males.
Upon arrival, troopers located the victim of the reported assault, who had sustained a head injury. The victim directed troopers to a nearby camper within the campground where the other male party was located.

As troopers approached the camper, a male subject exited while holding what appeared to be a black handgun in his right hand. The subject allegedly pointed the apparent handgun at a trooper and continued advancing toward him. The trooper then discharged his duty weapon, striking the subject.
Troopers immediately rendered medical aid and requested emergency medical services. The subject was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS personnel. The identities of those involved are being withheld at this time pending next of kin notifications.

This incident is being investigated by the New York Attorney’s General’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Catskill. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the New York State Police at 845-344-5300.
