Sadly, I have known of several people over the years that had to rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. This program is designed to help people in need by affording them the opportunity to buy good food for their family. SNAP went through a change yesterday potentially offering even more options for those in need.

On Monday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that establishes a statewide Restaurant Meals Program. Once authorized by the USDA, the program would allow homeless, elderly and disabled SNAP recipients to use their benefits at participating restaurants. The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance is now mandated to file the application.

The Governor wasn't done there however. Hochul also announced the launch of the $25 million Restaurant Resiliency Program. This program would offer funding so that New York's network of food banks and emergency food providers can buy food directly from local restaurants and then get meals to those in need. As we all know the restaurant industry has been hit hard by the pandemic. This could be a bit of a boost for them.
