10 Cover Songs That Are Better Than the Originals
Last week, we launched a Loud List of 10 Awesome Covers That Sound Nothing Like the Originals. It got such a great response and spawned so much discussion, we decided to follow it up with 10 Cover Songs That Are Better Than the Originals!
Eat your hearts out, Fleetwood Mac, because Judas Priest took hold of “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)” and transformed it into a heavy metal powerhouse. To this day, the track is one of Priest most performed cuts, even more so than “Painkiller” or “Beyond the Realms of Death.” The metal gods put an electric and exciting spin on the Fleetwood cut, and we give our thanks.
One of the greatest covers in history is Jimi Hendrix’s re-imagining of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.” Dylan’s folk staple boasts great lyrics, but it’s a little tame compared with Hendrix’s wildly inventive guitar work and soulful vocal approach.
Some of these covers are incredible due to how out of place they should be. How about Type O Negative’s version of Seals and Crofts’ “Summer Breeze.” Peter Steele turned one of the corniest clean songs of all time into a sex-fueled doomfest. Nobody could do it quite like the Green Man.
