A big project is proposed to take over a part of Albany's South End. It was delayed for over a year because of the pandemic, but now it is back on track.

What is Being Proposed in the South End of Albany?

There is a $115 million dollar mixed-use development called the Seventy-Six that would involve demolishing many vacant and rundown homes in the area near Second Avenue, Leonard Street, Krank Street, and Seymore Avenue.

Then the proposal wants to replace the homes with two hundred forty-six affordable apartments. According to the Albany Business Review, there will also be a communal greenhouse, STEM training center, urban farming center, and other amenities to help the South End neighborhood that has struggled because of poverty.

Who is The Driving Force Behind the Seventy-Six?

The one who has been pushing for this project is Corey Jones. He grew up in the South End and has devoted himself to making this dream come true. He has always been an advocate for rebuilding the area and shared his vision back in 2018. He admits he doesn't know a lot about development but he's partnering up with the right people. During the pandemic, it was hard to get the financing together but now he expects to go ahead with the project.
