While we don't have an exact definition for the term "empire state of mind", we can tell you one thing: it probably means you're pretty smart.

Of course, there are always outliers, but by-and-large, New York is one of the best states in the country in which you can be a student. When you weigh the level of education, cost of tuition, room-and-board, crime rates, things to do and more, the sum of all parts is greater than nearly every state in the union.

Studee, an educational consulting service, compiled data on the aspects of being a student. They created "total scores" for each state's student life, and used the scores to rank each state, best to worst.

According to Studee, New York is the second-best state to be a student in the country, behind only California. The database lists the average tuition in New York to be $8,467, and counts 14 high-ranking universities in the state, second-most of any state mentioned in the Top 10 in the country.

New York also sports the third-highest average salary after graduation, and only California and Florida boast a better score for "things to do" in the respective state. All in all, the amenities of New York state add up pretty nicely.

When it's all said and done, the distilled "final score" of New York state is a 7.04. Only California's 7.54 final score is better than New York. Spots No. 3 through 10 on the list belong to Minnesota, Utah, Florida, Wisconsin, Texas, Virginia, Colorado and Massachusetts. Only the first two, California and New York, have final scores above a 7.0.

So, what do you think? Does New York deserve the hype it's getting?
