Like in many other places around the world, here in Albany, artists painted a beautiful mural with the words “Black Lives Matter” with yellow lettering down Lark Street. Over the last year, the mural has suffered from the harsh elements of sun, snow, sleet, and rain that left the mural in a little disrepair.

The mural is meant to bring attention to the injustices and overall poor treatment that Black people struggle through each day in this country. Because the mural has suffered from disrepair over the past year, City officials are making repairs to the mural a priority.

Repairs began on the mural today and they will continue for the rest of the week.
Lark Street was closed from Lancaster Street to Hudson Avenue beginning 6 o’clock this morning and it will remain closed until 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 15.

It’s good to know that it’s important to local officials to keep the message out there that Black lives do matter. Officials say that painting the mural is just the beginning. There are more plans in the works to have a more long-term fix to the problem so that the mural will not have to be painted each year to keep it looking fresh and new.

Having the street closed for a few days seems like a minor inconvenience that we must pay to keep the message out there that we are important, we matter, and that our lives matter
