It looks like the Capital Region is in store for a bad mosquito season this summer. With the higher number of mosquitoes comes a higher risk of mosquito-borne illnesses. All across the Northeast and here in the Capital Region, there is a higher population of mosquitos. According to News Channel 13, with their being more mosquitos this summer, there is a greater risk for West Nile virus and other diseases they carry.

The New York State Department of Health is constantly monitoring the mosquito population from June to October. They say their disease findings are on the rise. Back in 2015, there were fifty-one cases of West Nile and in 2017 it was up to eighty-seven.

There are some things you can do to keep the mosquito population down. Standing water is where they breed. If you can eliminate it, they will have nowhere to lay their eggs. Also, to protect yourself, use an insect repellent that contains DEET.
