Bronx Bombers Hire Former Albany-Colonie Yankee As Coach

The New York Yankees have brought home one of their own. A once popular prospect around the diamond at Heritage Park, former Albany-Colonie Yankee, Hensley 'Bam Bam' Muelens is heading back to a life in pinstripes. Muelens spent parts of the 1988 and 1989 seasons playing for the former Bronx Bombers AA affiliate, whom once resided near Albany Airport.

According to a report by Erik Boland of newsday.com, the Yankees have hired Muelens as their assistant hitting coach. This position seems to be a long departure from the former 3rd baseman's managerial pursuits. In 2017, when Joe Girardi and the Yankees parted ways, the Bombers interviewed Hensley Meulens for the job that GM Brian Cashman gave to Aaron Boone. I sort of feel badly for 'Bam Bam' because he has some terrific managerial credentials.

Hensly Meulens won three World Series rings as the hitting coach with the San Francisco Giants in 2012, 2014 and 2020. According to newsday.com, the former Albany-Colonie Yankee prospect is a close friend of Giants' manager Bruce Bochy, serving as his hitting coach from 2010-2017. Bochy reportedly pushed Muelens to become a big league manager. He was the Giants' bench coach in 2018 and 2019 before serving as the bench coach for the Mets in 2020.

Hensly 'Bam Bam' Muelens never amounted to much of a player but I do think he will be a great Major League manager some day soon. I interviewed 'Bam Bam' years ago during spring training. He is a very intelligent and engaging individual. He speaks five languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese and Papiamento and knows the game of baseball inside-out. The Yankees added a very nice piece to their staff this week.
