Did You Know The 12 Days of Christmas Actually Begins on Christmas Day
Christmas may be over, but did you know that according to the song 'The 12 Days of Christmas' Christmas Day should technically mark the start of all the Christmas festivities, not the end.
While we wrapping gifts for the Free Beer and Hot Wings Holiday Beak In last week a couple of questions came up regarding the 12 Days of Christmas tune.
- Does the 12 Days of Christmas count down to Christmas or follow the holiday?
- If it counts down to are you supposed to count down from 12 or up to?
So naturally we had to give it a Goog(le) ...Turns out you start with the 1st Day of Christmas which is actually Christmas Day and count up to the 12th Day of Christmas (January 5th). It feels like most people nowadays switch out of Christmas mode as soon as Midnight hits on Christmas Day. However, if you feel like there was a lot of effort and build up put into your holiday it looks like you can keep on celebrating right into the new year!
Now, I am not really a religious person but apparently the 12 Days of Christmas "is the period that in Christian theology marks the span between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi, the three wise men". It has been believed (and spread on the net) that the gifts are supposed to represent the teachings of Christianity but that theory has since been debunked.
The actual history behind the song and it's lyrics is really kind of interesting. If you want to dive more into it's past VOX put together a complete beak down of the song and it's history that even includes how much the gifts would cost if you were to buy them for your truelove (or your true love were to buy them for you) today. Spoiler alert ** it totals something like $170,609.46! You can check out the complete breakdown here.
